Abstract

Sustainable agriculture is increasingly viewed as a global response to challenges such as climate change, land degradation, and the demand for healthy, eco-friendly food. In Indonesia, organic rice farming has expanded rapidly, especially in South Sulawesi, which shows strong potential for developing sustainable farmer-based institutional systems. This study aims to analyze the institutional sustainability of organic rice farmers in South Sulawesi. Data were collected through structured interviews using questionnaires administered to 147 organic rice farmers in Sidenreng Rappang and Pinrang Regencies. A quantitative approach was applied using the Multidimensional Scaling (MDS) method to assess the sustainability index across economic, social, and environmental dimensions integrated within the institutional context. The analysis revealed that the institutional sustainability index reached 60.10, categorized as moderately sustainable. This indicates that farmer institutions have established an initial foundation of sustainability but remain in a transitional phase toward a more integrated and resilient system. Sensitivity analysis identified key influential attributes: market access and policy support (economic), farmer participation and access to education (social), and waste management and adoption of environmentally friendly technologies (environmental). The novelty of this study lies in applying the RAPFISH-based MDS method to evaluate institutional sustainability in organic rice farming through a multidimensional approach within a rarely examined regional context. Strengthening these key attributes simultaneously particularly social participation is strategic for enhancing institutional effectiveness and economic competitiveness. Therefore, achieving long-term sustainability in South Sulawesi’s organic rice farming requires strong synergy among social, economic, and environmental dimensions.
