Sediment Quality in Dumping Locations from Oil and Gas Drilling in the Makassar Strait, East Kalimantan
Abstract
This study aimed to assess the quality of sediments at a dumping site resulting from the drilling of oil and gas wells in Makassar Strait, East Kalimantan Province. To accomplish this objective, samples from seven sites in the study location were analyzed using laboratory equipment for chemical and heavy metals analysis. The heavy metal content was determined based on the 2018 guidelines set by the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the standard method established by the American Public Health Association using the atomic absorption spectroscopy instrument at the Water Quality Laboratory of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science, Mulawarman University. The results showed that the quality of the sediments in the Makassar Strait exhibited varying qualities. The physical parameters were dominated by clay with the highest and lowest percentages at point B8 and the initial baseline, reaching 83% and 47%, respectively. The chemical parameters at sites B3 and B8 were of good to excellent quality. Heavy metal parameters displayed a tendency to accumulate metals, with the initial baseline exhibiting the highest distribution and ranging from insignificant to severe pollution levels. Meanwhile, points B1, B2, B3, B5, and B8 indicate mercury contamination with very heavy pollution levels in Class 5. In conclusion, point B8 exhibited superior quality regarding physical, chemical, and heavy metal contamination parameters. These results provide crucial insights into the quality of sediments in the study area, emphasizing the importance of ongoing monitoring and management of oil and gas drilling activities in the Makassar Strait to mitigate the negative impacts on the surrounding environment.
